Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin weighed in after a large-scale data breach hit several U.S. banks, calling for a shift in how people think about privacy. His message was direct: privacy should be standard practice, not something you add later.

What Happened With the Bank Leak

The breach involved a cyberattack on SitusAMC, a mortgage tech vendor, that exposed sensitive records linked to big names like JPMorgan, Citi, and Morgan Stanley. Some of the leaked files included accounting records, legal documents, and even customer data.

Privacy is not a feature. Privacy is hygiene.

The full extent of the damage is still being looked into. Reacting to the news, Buterin took to Twitter and wrote, “Privacy is not a feature. Privacy is hygiene.” That post quickly started making the rounds across crypto and tech circles.

Why He Framed It That Way

Buterin’s words weren’t just a reaction to this one breach. They reflected a broader idea he’s been pushing for a while. Vitalik believes privacy should be treated the same way people treat routine digital hygiene, like locking your device or updating your software.

Earlier this year, Vitalik shared ideas for how Ethereum could build in better privacy tools, like stealth addresses and zero-knowledge systems, which let users control what they reveal without putting everything out in the open.

What This Means for Ethereum and the Industry

The timing of the comment fits into a bigger shift happening across crypto. Developers on Ethereum are working on ways to bring privacy features straight into the protocol and layer-2 tools, so users don’t need to do anything extra to stay protected.

Other networks are exploring similar paths. Bitcoin projects are looking at wallet-level upgrades, while chains like Zcash that offer full transaction shielding are starting to feel more relevant again. People are starting to rethink how much information they’re leaving behind on public chains.

What It Means for Everyday Users

Treating privacy like hygiene would change how both platforms and users approach security. Instead of asking users to switch on private settings or figure out new tools, the protections would be built in from the start. That shift would make privacy automatic, not something only experts can figure out.

Market Cap

The leak at SitusAMC shows how even large, well-resourced systems can fail to keep data safe. It also adds pressure on blockchain builders to design systems that don’t have those same weak spots.

What’s Next on the Privacy Front

As Ethereum continues evolving, expect to see more attention on things like stealth addresses and selective disclosure. Buterin’s comment suggests privacy won’t just be one part of Ethereum’s future; it will be part of its foundation. Wallet developers, layer-2 teams, and core protocol engineers are all likely to be part of that push.

Outside of crypto, regulators and traditional financial institutions may also be forced to rethink how they handle user data. The line between optional privacy and expected privacy is getting thinner.

Buterin’s message lands at a time when trust in large institutions is again under pressure. If banks can leak sensitive data, the idea of making privacy as common as handwashing starts to sound less like a metaphor and more like a plan.
